What you will learn
Four modules, from basics to durable support
Module 1: Basic ECMO
Weeks 1 to 3
- History, evidence, indications and configurations
- Circuit components and ECMO physiology
- Anticoagulation, sedation and antimicrobials
- Complications and troubleshooting
- Physiotherapy and ambulation on ECMO
Module 2: VV ECMO
Weeks 4 to 6
- Respiratory failure, ARDS and the evidence for VV ECMO
- Cannulation, retrieval and transport
- Determinants of oxygenation and ventilation goals
- Extracorporeal CO2 removal and prone positioning
- Weaning, bridge to transplant and long-term support
Module 3: VA ECMO
Weeks 7 to 9
- Cardiogenic and postcardiotomy shock
- Peripheral and central cannulation
- Monitoring, anticoagulation targets and HIT
- Weaning from VA ECMO
- Sepsis, trauma, pregnancy and extracorporeal CPR
Module 4: Mechanical circulatory support
Weeks 10 to 12
- Intra-aortic balloon pump
- Impella indications and troubleshooting
- Durable LVADs and post-implant care
