Questions

Frequently asked questions

How is my score worked out?

You get one point for each question you answer correctly. Most cases have three questions. Metabolic acidosis and mixed acidosis cases also ask about the anion gap, so they have four. Only your first check on each case counts.

Can I use the hint?

Yes. The hint costs nothing. It points you to the first thing to look at in the gas.

What order should I read a blood gas in?

Start with the pH to see whether the blood is acidic or alkaline. Then look at the PaCO2 and the bicarbonate to see which one explains the pH. Finally check for compensation, the oxygen level, and, if the picture is a metabolic acidosis, the anion gap.

Is this for patient care?

No. The cases are teaching examples for education only, not for clinical decision making. Always follow your local guidelines.
